Interview with Danielle Ruffen
What is your musical background, and how did it shape the artist you are today?
My family is full of musicians and vocalists on both sides. My grandmother was a Jazz vocalist in Boston ma. and her daughter was also an R&B singer performing around Boston and New York. My sister is also a singer and teaches at Berklee College of Music currently. I watched these amazing women and naturally absorbed what was going on around me. However it’s was my Great- Aunt Wilma Ruffen who raised me after the murder of my mother at age 6, who really nurtured my musical gift. She told me that by age 2, I was already able to identify Sarah Vaughn on the radio.
She enrolled me into the Community Music Center to learn classical piano for 8 years so that I could learn the theory but I realized I could sing at age 11. I started sneaking into the living room at night to play my aunts old records and I taught myself to sing horn lines that way!! By age 13 I had revealed this gift to my family and the rest is history! I’ve been singing and performing around my city since age 16. I’ll never stop!
Who are you related to, and how has your family influenced your journey in music?
My Godfather was Larry Woo, who was very influential in teaching me studio etiquette. He taught me everything I needed to know in order for me not to have to depend on other voices to create the sound I wanted to hear. Stacking vocals became my signature style because of his teachings.
I’m also related somewhere in the distance to David Ruffin of the Temptations. On my grandfather’s side.
What interesting things about you would you want people to know that they might not expect?
I love to cook, and I’m also a massage therapist and candle maker!
Why did you decide to sign with your new label, and what made it feel like the right move?
I decided to sign with the label because I feel a real sense of family and transparency when it comes to what is expected from everyone involved. I finally feel that this is now my time because I’ve been through life. Hard. And I’ve learned the lessons in life that have strengthened me into the woman I am today: focused, and full of creativity.
How would you describe your unique sound and what separates you from other artists right now?
My sound is a culmination of my upbringing and my life as a choir director. It’s Jazz, Soul, A little touch of R&B and a dash of Gospel. All spun together to form my sound. It differentiates me from other artists because when people hear me sing, they tell me it’s “Healing” to me.
What personal experiences inspire your songwriting and creative process the most?
Love, Pain and my own life experience’s inspire my creative process when I write and perform. It’s an outlet. For me to lay myself out on the table and share with the audience as I heal through my musical expression.
Where do you see your career heading next, and what can fans expect from you in the near future?
I see my career moving forward full steam ahead into the stratosphere!!! I have so much more to share with the world and I’d love to take them on my journey. Fans can Look for more music and and even a children’s book in the near future!
